The wet side is the product
I have opened a school backpack after a Tuesday set and found a maths book with a tide mark. The togs went in on top of the homework because there was nowhere else. That is not a careless child. That is a bag with one cavity asked to do a two-cavity job.
A swim backpack is a wet-dry split you can still carry on a shoulder. Wet kit goes in a sealed pouch, a mesh pocket, or a removable kit bag. Dry kit stays in the main cavity: hoodie, second towel if they packed one, phone in a zip, maybe a laptop sleeve if school runs straight into training. If those two jobs share a space, the dry side loses. Every time.
Shops will sell you a print and a team patch. Fine. Buy the print after you have found the wet pocket with your hand. If you cannot feel a second zone, it is a school bag with a swim logo. Put it back.
Club bag versus gala-day bag
Parents buy one huge backpack and then wonder why the race hat is damp on Saturday. The club bag and the gala-day bag are not the same object. They fail in opposite directions.
The club bag is the weekday machine. It takes a wet kit after a set, sometimes a kickboard if they carry their own, street shoes, a bottle, and it rides a bus or sits in a boot while someone finishes a second session. Volume helps. Mesh that can drip helps. A wet pocket that you can hang open at home is the feature that lasts a season.
The gala-day bag is smaller and drier on purpose. Spare race kit should not spend the morning against Tuesday's chlorine. Deck time is long. They need a hoodie they can actually put on, and they need the spare seal to stay spare. I am not reprinting what goes in. That inventory is the gala packing list. This page stops at the vessel. If the weekend is a hotel and a second morning, extra dry kit is overnight travel gala survival, not a 75-litre dump you drag onto the deck.

Some families own one backpack and use a removable kit bag as the wet side on Tuesdays, then empty it and pack the gala list into the dry cavity on Friday night. That works. What does not work is leaving last night's towel in the same zip as Saturday's spare cap.
The bus-ride test
Forget the shop floor. The test is the ride home. Wet togs, a used towel, maybe fins if they carry them, and a child who will not hold a separate plastic bag because their hands are full. Forty minutes. The bag sits upright on the floor or leans against a seat back. If the wet zone is a rumour, the dry hoodie is damp before they reach the stop. If the base soaks through, the books at the bottom take the pool with them.
A water-resistant base is not a gimmick in that hour. Changing-room floors are wet. Bus floors are not a towel. I would rather a plain bag with a real wet pocket than a printed 50-litre sack that is one big sponge. Capacity is how much they can lose. The split is how much they can keep.
Name the bag. A black Alliance and a black Teamster look the same in a pile of ten. A luggage tag or a stitched initial is cheaper than buying a replacement because theirs walked onto the wrong bus.
The bus does not care about the logo. It cares whether the dripping towel has its own pocket for forty minutes.
Shoe pocket, wet floor
Street shoes after a session are wet on the sole and gritty. If they go in with the hoodie, the hoodie becomes a doormat. A bottom compartment, a ventilated shoe pocket, or at least a water-resistant base with a dedicated wet zone is the adult version of "leave them in the porch."
Arena still prints this in plain language. The Fastpack 3.0's bottom compartment is for wet clothes or two pairs of shoes. That is the sentence I wanted when I was twelve and my trainers sat on my dry kit. TYR's Alliance line uses expandable mesh for wet versus dry, plus a water-resistant shell. Speedo's Teamster 2.0 puts a hidden ventilated front pocket on wet suits, caps, and goggles, and a water-resistant base on the deck. Different diagrams. Same physics.
Pool shoes for deck, if the club wants them, can live in that bottom zone too. They should not live in the zip with the race silicone.

The TYR Spirit Team Alliance 45L is the colourway I opened on 23 August 2026. Official copy still lists expandable mesh pockets for separating wet and dry items, spring hooks for wet suits, a mesh bottle pocket, contour padding, and a protective sleeve for large electronics. Size 20 inches high, 13.5 wide, 10.5 deep, about 0.84 kilograms. Spirit Team sat at $92. On the same Alliance 45L collection, Montipora and Validus were on sale at $55 from a $92 list. Same chassis, different print. I would buy the wet-dry mesh, not the artwork.
The Arena Fastpack 3.0 is product 005295, 40 litres, built as a hanging locker: carabiner hook, reinforced bottom, a large back section that takes a kickboard, and a breathable bottom compartment Arena says will take wet gear or two pairs of shoes. A separate swimbag is in the pack for wet garments. Arena Swim UK still had it on 23 August 2026 at a struck-through £72.99, sale £43.79. If they carry a kickboard and street shoes, this is the diagram that matches the week.
The Speedo Teamster 2.0 is the 35-litre team bag. Speedo USA still describes a main drawstring compartment with a removable water-resistant kit bag for wet versus dry, a padded laptop sleeve, a water-resistant base, a bottle pocket, and a hidden ventilated front pocket for wet suits, caps, and goggles. Navy was on offer in some listings near $44 to $53 against an $89 RRP. The UK Teamster 2.0 rucksack sat at £48 the same day. Smaller than the Alliance. Enough for most club nights if they are not also hauling a kickboard and two pairs of shoes. The removable kit bag is the Tuesday trick: pull it out, hang it, leave the dry cavity alone.
45 litres of one cavity is worse than 35 litres with a wet pocket. Measure the week: togs, towel, shoes, bottle, maybe a board. If Saturday is a different bag, do not size Tuesday for a championship weekend.
Leave these on the shelf
The school backpack they already own. It will do one emergency Tuesday. Then the lining holds chlorine and the laptop sleeve learns what a wet cap feels like. Keep school in school. Keep swim in swim.
A fashion tote or a duffel without a wet zone. Hands-free matters on a bus. A tote that sits in a puddle is a wet floor with handles. A gym duffel can work in a car. It is a poor bus bag because it has no shoulder and no split.
The 75-litre team mesh the coach uses for a crate. TYR still sells big mesh equipment bags for programmes. That is a coach object. A child wearing it on public transport is wearing a sail. They will fill it because the space exists, and then they cannot find the goggles.
A brand-new gala backpack the week of the meet, with the tags on. Unfamiliar zips on a first licensed Saturday is how a spare cap stays in the boot. Use the club bag for a month, or empty it and pack from the gala packing list on Friday, when the zips are already theirs.
Do not pour Tuesday's wet towel into Saturday's dry spare pocket. Do not buy a second bag because the first one smells if you have never opened the wet zip at home. Do not put a laptop in a bag that still has a damp kit bag zipped inside it. The split only works if you use it.
Empty it the same night
The bag is not self-cleaning. Hang the wet pocket. Pull the removable kit bag if they have a Teamster. Turn the towel out. Caps in a pouch, not loose against a zip. Shoes in the porch, not fermenting in the bottom compartment until Thursday.
A closed damp cavity is the smell parents blame on cheap fabric. It is chlorine plus no air. Empty a sale bag the same night and it lasts. Leave a dear one zipped until the weekend and it will not.
The bag holds wet kit. It will not hold the 100 free. Event, course, the number, when they get off the bus.
