What job are you hiring the app for?
A “swim training app” in a search result is usually one of three products wearing the same label. One counts laps from your wrist. One shows the heat sheet. One is a diary you actually own. Ranking them against each other is how families buy a second Garmin and still lose last best in a WhatsApp screenshot.
Ask the job, then hire. Metres and pace is hardware. Saturday’s official 100 free is a results database. “What did I actually do this week, and what is last best in 25m and 50m?” is a training log. Club swimmers — and the parents on the balcony — need the third even when they already own the first two. If you are still on a sheet named FINAL (1), start with spreadsheet vs swimming app. The why is in why swimmers should log training; this page is the which.
Three kinds of swimming app
Auto-track lives on a watch or in goggles: Garmin Connect, Polar Flow, Apple Watch Pool Swim, FORM’s HUD. Swim.com and MySwimPro sit beside that stack with a library or a plan. Strava wants the activity for a feed. None of them know your seeded 50 breast unless you type it.
Meet results are a different shelf. Meet Mobile is the balcony app when the host publishes the Hy-Tek database. SwimCloud is rankings and recruiting, fed by files hosts submit. Gophin auto-syncs official North American history. Brilliant when the database has the swim. Empty when it does not.
A competitive training log is the thing I wanted when I built Finzy: sessions, PBs by event and course, goals, the week beside the next gala. You write it. It does not pretend to be a watch. It does not scrape Swim Ireland. That honesty is the product.
Same search, three products. Ranking them as rivals is how you buy the wrong second app.
The comparison — job, best for, not for
Read across, not down a fake ranking.
| App | Job you are hiring | Best for | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garmin Connect / Polar Flow | Auto-track from the watch | Metres, splits, SWOLF if you already wear one | Club PBs by event and course; gala results |
| Apple Watch Workout | Pool / open-water swim on the wrist | Closing rings; casual and tri metres | A season of event PBs; heat sheets |
| FORM goggles | Real-time HUD in the water | Interval pace without looking at a wrist | Replacing a log or results. Hardware is the product. |
| Swim.com | Lap tracking + library + community | Fitness / Masters / USMS social tracking | Official results; last best by SC/LC event |
| MySwimPro | Structured plans, self-coached | “What should I swim today?” without a club coach | Club swimmers who already have a whiteboard set |
| Strava | Social activity feed | Sharing a swim with run / bike friends | Swim PBs, galas, heat sheets |
| Meet Mobile | Heat sheets and live results | The balcony, when the host publishes the meet | A training log or a season archive |
| SwimCloud | Competition database and rankings | Published official times, recruiting | Practice; unpublished club Level 1 galas |
| Gophin | Auto-sync official NA results | USA Swimming / Swimming Canada history | Irish or UK databases; Tuesday practice |
| TrainingPeaks | Coach-prescribed endurance plans | Triathletes with a TP coach and a watch | A simple club swim log in metres |
| Finzy | Log sessions, PBs, goals, the week | Club swimmers and parents who need one list they own | Auto-import; replacing a watch or FORM |
Watches and goggles — they count. They do not keep last best.
If you already own a Garmin, Garmin Connect is the free data backbone: pool length, auto rest, SWOLF, heart rate. Polar Flow does the same job on a Polar. For a triathlete that stack is not optional. For a club swimmer doing mixed IM on a winter Tuesday, the watch is a metre counter. It will not tell you that you missed Monday, or that last best in 50m 100 free is 1:08.22.
Apple Watch Pool Swim is the same hire: set the length, press start, get sets in Fitness. Fitness+ is studio classes, not a club log. Do not buy a Watch hoping it will remember Connacht Open.
FORM projects pace and lap on the lens — a real job when looking at a wrist wrecks the rhythm. The app without the goggles is a weaker planner than MySwimPro. If you will not buy the hardware, do not hire FORM for a HUD you will not have. Keep the watch. Then write the week somewhere that knows 25m from 50m — why the week belongs in a log.
Do not treat SWOLF as last best. A 4,200m workout total is not a 100 fly. Course, stroke, and distance are the competitive unit.
Workout libraries — MySwimPro, Swim.com, Strava
MySwimPro is the best answer I know to “no club coach — what should I swim today?” Plans, video, intervals. Watch sync exists; test your model before a year of subscription. If you already have a whiteboard set, you do not need a second coach in your pocket. Hiring it as a PB tracker is the mix-up.
Swim.com is the honest free tier: library, watch laps, leaderboards. Strong for fitness and US Masters. It is not built around licensed gala events in metres, SC versus LC, or a seed time. Community distance is a different sport from last best 200 IM, 25m.
Strava is a social feed. Your running friends see that you swam. Event PBs do not live there. Use it for kudos. Do not use it as the family list.
Self-coached: hire MySwimPro or Swim.com for the set. Club coach: write their set after you dry off. Sixty seconds: what to write after practice.
Meet results — Meet Mobile, SwimCloud, Gophin
Parents search “swim tracking app” after a gala and land on a results product. Then Tuesday practice has nowhere to go.
Meet Mobile is a meet-day tool: heats and live results when the host publishes the database. Common at bigger Swim Ireland meets; not guaranteed at a Sunday Level 1. Results are often behind a subscription. A gala that never got posted will not be there in March. Use it on Saturday. Do not hire it as the archive. The parent how-to is how to use Meet Mobile without refreshing into a panic.
SwimCloud holds published competition — Irish and British included — when someone sends the file. Rankings, recruiting. It does not log training. If the host never submitted the meet, the swim is missing.
Gophin auto-imports official USA Swimming and Swimming Canada results. Free, and excellent at that job. It does not ingest Swim Ireland rankings, and it does not know a kick set. If you race in Dublin, it is not your log. Keep a personal list for the Level 1 the database will never see — how to track swimming times.
TrainingPeaks — only if that is already your stack
TrainingPeaks is a coach-prescribed endurance calendar that syncs to Garmin, Polar, sometimes Apple Watch. If your tri coach already lives there, stay. It is not a gala product, and it is heavy for a thirteen-year-old whose job is to write the main set and go to bed.
What Finzy is — and is not
I built Finzy because I wanted the week beside the race on the phone already in the kit bag. It is a competitive training log. You type the workout. You keep personal bests by event and course. You set goals. You can see the week. That is the hire.
Finzy does not auto-import official results from Swim Ireland, SwimCloud, Gophin, or Meet Mobile. It does not replace a FORM goggle, a Garmin, Polar, or Apple Watch. It will not count your laps while you swim. Keep the hardware for metres. Open the ranking site for published times. Finzy is the list you own when those two are silent — and when Tuesday will be gone if you do not write it. Typing the time is a feature when the ranking page is empty and the swim was real. Free when your club uses Finzy; it works solo too.
Log the session. Keep last best by event and by 25m / 50m. Hold a goal. Look at the week next to the next gala. That is the product.
Irish and UK club swimming — metres, galas, gaps
We race in metres. Short course is 25m; long course is 50m. A “best 100 free” that jumps between them is a lie. USMS leaderboards are hired for a different calendar. If the heat sheet says SC or LC, the log has to say it too.
Irish club life is galas, Team Managers, WhatsApp PDFs, and a national ranking that is a filter, not a diary. Level 1 times often stay with the club. Auto-import cannot invent a swim the database never saw. The car-park time still happened. Someone has to write it. Parents do not need five apps: the balcony tool if it is up, one log on the swimmer’s phone. By the early teens they should own it.
How to pick — a short decision
- ✓Metres and pace from hardware you already own? Keep Garmin, Polar, or Apple Watch. Add FORM only if you want the HUD enough to buy the goggles.
- ✓Self-coached, no club set? MySwimPro or Swim.com for the workout — then still log what you did.
- ✓On the balcony this Saturday? Meet Mobile if the host published the meet. Otherwise the WhatsApp PDF.
- ✓Published official history? SwimCloud when the file exists. Gophin if you race in the US or Canada. Not as a substitute for practice.
- ✓The week, PBs by event and course, a goal that survives October? Finzy — or a ruthless sheet you will actually open.
Hire the watch to count. Hire Meet Mobile for the balcony. Hire a log for the week and last best. I built Finzy for the third job, not the first two.
