The whiteboard, the phone, and the empty Tuesday

I still think in boards. A decent Tuesday has a warm-up, a main set with a send-off, and a cool-down that is not a secret extra 400. Somebody wrote it. On a club night that somebody is the coach. Your job is to swim it, then write what actually happened before the car park argument about dinner.

The empty Tuesday is the other animal. Masters who train alone. A triathlete whose bike coach never learned interval notation. A parent who bought a lane at the leisure centre and now has a child staring at water. Forty minutes of "just swim" is how shoulders get bored and how you arrive at March with no idea what you did in January.

A coach app is a phone trying to be that missing board. It is not a watch counting metres. It is not Meet Mobile on the balcony. Those are other hires, covered honestly on best swimming apps. Here the only question is: who is allowed to write the set?

Two coaches is not twice the training

If the board says aerobic 200s and the phone says race-pace 50s, the swimmer will pick the one that feels like a PB. That is how you double-load a thirteen-year-old. Put the phone away when a person already wrote Tuesday.

You are hiring a writer, not a ranking

Search results mash five products into one "best swim training app" pile. They do not write Tuesday the same way. One generates a plan from a questionnaire. One hands you a library and hopes you pick. One is a goggle subscription wearing an app icon. One is a triathlon calendar that happens to include a swim. Ranking them with scores out of ten is how families buy FORM without goggles, or TriDot for a child who has never owned a bike.

Ask the writer question first. Then look at hardware and price. Last best by event and course is still a log problem, which is why why swimmers should log training sits beside this page rather than inside it. Sixty seconds after you climb out is what to write after practice. The sheet that ate Christmas is spreadsheet vs swimming app.

Who writes Tuesday, and who should stay out

Read the "writes Tuesday" column. If that sentence is not the job you need, skip the row.

App How Tuesday gets written Keep it when Put it down when
MySwimPro Personalised plan and workout of the day, optional watch guided session Self-coached. No board. You want tomorrow named for you A club coach already owns the set
OpenSwim 1,000+ workouts and 60+ plans; a personalised plan on iOS only You like picking from a library, or you want a multi-week block You need a triathlon engine, or you already have a whiteboard
Swim.com Free library, builder, and recommendations; watch tracking beside it Fitness or Masters. You want a set without a subscription You need last best by licensed event and course
FORM Swim app Premium library and HeadCoach, synced into FORM goggles You already bought the goggles and want the set in the lens You will not buy the hardware. The app without goggles is the wrong hire
TriDot FitLogic writes swim, bike, and run as one week You are racing triathlon and want the swim prescribed with the rest You are a pool-only club swimmer
Finzy Does not write the set. You type what you swam You need the week and last best by event and course You expected a workout library or a Garmin import

MySwimPro: the usual answer to "what do I swim today?"

If you have no coach and you want tomorrow named for you, this is the product I would try first. MySwimPro sells a coach subscription: personalised training plans, a workout of the day, an algorithm that adjusts as you log, technique drills, and guided sessions you can send to Apple Watch, Garmin, or Wear OS. Their own FAQ is honest about hardware. A watch is optional. You can take a PDF to the pool.

The official Coach page on 23 August 2026 listed about $19 a month or $99 a year, with a seven-day trial. The UK App Store also showed higher SWIM SKUs around £19 to £179, so treat that as a range, not a promise. Check the SKU in your store before you tap.

What it is not: a replacement for a person on deck, and not a season archive of 100 fly in 25m versus 50m. Club swimmers who already have a board should not pay to argue with it. Self-coached adults who hate inventing send-offs will get their money's worth if they actually follow the plan.

OpenSwim: a library with a French federation stamp

OpenSwim is the other "write me a session" app people mean when they are tired of MySwimPro's paywall. The site claims 1,000+ expert workouts and 60+ training plans. Watch sync is listed for Garmin, Apple, Suunto, Coros, Polar, and Strava, with send-to-watch on Garmin, Suunto, or Apple. A personalised plan tailored to a goal is marked iOS only. If you live on Android, that line matters.

The French Swimming Federation named it the official app for affiliated swimmers in January 2025. That is a real partnership, not a badge I invented. It does not make OpenSwim the club programme at your local pool.

US App Store Premium on 23 August 2026 was about $13 a month or $70 a year ($12.99 / $69.99). The website does not print a public price list; terms say the fee shows in the app. I did not invent a UK pound figure. Look at your store before you subscribe. One App Store review on their site complained that some sessions do not fit a 50m pool. That is the sort of gripe you only hear from people who actually used it.

Swim.com: the free library, if you can live with community metres

Swim.com calls itself the official swim workout and training platform of United States Masters Swimming. The useful part for this page is the writer: more than 1,000 workouts, recommendations from pace and stroke and distance, and a builder if you want to assemble your own. You can send a workout to a compatible watch. Beside that sits lap tracking, leaderboards, and clubs. Swim AI is labelled coming soon on the homepage. I am not treating it as a feature you can hire today.

The UK App Store listed Swim.com: Swim Tracker as free on 23 August 2026, with store copy promising thousands of smart workouts for free and no in-app purchase list on that page. If a paid tier appears later, the listing will say so. Until then, this is the honest cheap hire for "give me a set."

It is still a poor last-best diary. Community distance and pool leaderboards are a different sport from seeded 200 IM, short course. Use it to fill an empty Tuesday. Write the race-relevant line somewhere that knows 25m from 50m.

FORM: the app is not the product. The goggles are.

People download FORM Swim hoping for a phone coach. The App Store listing is blunt: built for FORM Smart Swim 1 and Smart Swim 2 goggles. Without the lens, you hired a remote control for hardware you do not own.

FORM Premium is the writer layer: 1,500+ guided workouts synced to the goggles, HeadCoach, training plans, a workout builder, Script to turn pasted or photographed text into a guided session, and import from TrainingPeaks and TriDot. FORM's support page splits it cleanly. Cancel Premium and you keep real-time metrics, pool and open-water tracking, in-app analysis, and SwimStraight. You lose the plan in the lens.

UK App Store membership on 23 August 2026 was about £13 a month or £99 a year. The official Premium page listed about $15 a month or $119 a year, with a one-month trial for new customers. Goggles are separate hardware. Do not budget the subscription and forget the pair of glasses.

Club swimmers with a whiteboard can still use Script to throw the coach's set onto the lens. That is a HUD hire, not a second coach. Self-coached swimmers who will not buy goggles should stop reading this section and go back to MySwimPro or OpenSwim.

FORM without goggles is a remote with no television. Buy the hardware, or hire a different writer.

TriDot: the swim is one third of the week

TriDot is not a swim club product wearing a triathlon sticker. FitLogic assesses, prescribes, evaluates, and predicts across swim, bike, and run. The swim session is real. Support docs show zone notation, drills, and send-offs. FORM even imports TriDot workouts into the goggles. The week around that swim is still a triathlon week. Miss that and you will pay endurance-sport money for a pool plan you could have got cheaper.

Official pricing on 23 August 2026: Lifestyle about $15 a month for one scheduled sprint or Olympic, Essentials $39, Complete $99, Premium Coached $249 with a dedicated coach. Fourteen-day trial, no credit card. Complete includes swim drill optimisation. That is a triathlon upsell, not a reason for an age-group club swimmer to subscribe.

If your life is already brick sessions and a race calendar, TriDot can write Tuesday's water. If your life is a squad board and a gala in metres, you are in the wrong shop.

A short checklist, not a score

I do not print fake 9.4/10 tables. Tick the situation you are actually in.

  1. A person already wrote the board. Do not hire a coach app. Write their set. Keep last best in a log.
  2. Empty Tuesday, pool only, you want tomorrow named. Start with MySwimPro if you will pay. Start with Swim.com if you will not. OpenSwim if you want a library and you are fine with iOS for the personalised plan.
  3. You already own FORM goggles. Premium is how the set reaches the lens. The phone app alone is not the hire.
  4. You are training for a triathlon. TriDot writes the week. A swim-only library will not pace your bike.
  5. You still need last best by event and course. That is not this shelf. Type the session. Do not wait for a watch import that Finzy does not do.
One writer

Pick one source of Tuesday. Board, or MySwimPro, or OpenSwim, or Swim.com, or FORM Premium, or TriDot. Mixing two programmes in the same week is how you get sore and confused. The log can sit beside any of them. A second coach cannot.

Finzy is the log after the set. It is not a coach app.

I built Finzy because I wanted the week I actually swam, and last best by event and course, without pretending a library was a diary. It does not contain workouts for you to follow. It does not auto-import Garmin, FORM, or Meet Mobile. You type the session. That sounds primitive until you notice the official 100 free never hit a ranking site, or the useful line was "main set cut short, shoulder niggle," which no watch will ever title correctly.

Free on iPhone and Android. The coach app can still write Tuesday. After you climb out, the log is what you did, not what the phone hoped you would do. Parents: you are not the second coach. You are the person who makes sure the line got written before everyone forgets whether Monday happened.

FAQ

No. If someone already writes the set on the board, a coach app is a second programme you will ignore or fight. Write their set after you dry off. Keep last best in a log. Do not pay a subscription to contradict the person on deck.
A coach app writes Tuesday: a library, a plan, or intervals pushed to a watch or goggles. Finzy does not write sets. You type the session you swam. It keeps PBs by event and course. Free on iOS and Android. Not a workout library.
No. Finzy does not auto-import Garmin, FORM, or Meet Mobile. You type the session. That is the product, not a missing sync.
The UK App Store listed Swim.com: Swim Tracker as free on 23 August 2026, with no in-app purchase SKUs on that listing. The official site and store copy both advertise the workout library as free. Check the listing before you assume a paid tier has appeared.
FORM Swim is built for FORM Smart Swim 1 and Smart Swim 2 goggles. Premium guided workouts, HeadCoach, Script, and the workout builder are meant to land in the lens. Without the hardware you are hiring the wrong product. Buy goggles if you want the HUD. Hire MySwimPro or OpenSwim if you only need a set on a phone.
No. TriDot writes swim, bike, and run as one week. If you are a pool swimmer with no bike or run, you are paying for a triathlon engine. Hire a swim coach app, or keep the club board.
