The cap is half the job
I have stood on a seawall and lost a competent swimmer in three strokes because the cap was navy and the water was the same colour as the sky. The buoy was still there. A small orange comma. The head was not. That is the whole argument for two colours, not one.
The RNLI open-water page is blunt. Wear a brightly coloured swimming hat and take a tow float. If you tire, roll onto your back, hold something that floats, then signal. Swim England's kit list names the cap colours that actually work: neon pink, yellow, green, orange. A tow float belongs on unsupervised water, with a pealess whistle. HM Coastguard published the matching-pair version after a Cornwall rescue: pink float, matching cap, not blue, not black. A passer-by could keep pointing at one object. That is the point of the kit.
Goggles are how you see the next drum. That job is best open water swim goggles. The float is how other people see you. Do not mix the two purchases.
Visibility, rest, dry-bag pocket
Shops sell one blob and call it safety. The blob does three different things. Know which you bought.
Visibility. The float sits behind the small of the back on a short leash. A helm sees it if the colour is loud. Buy orange, pink, citrus, fluo green. New Wave's FAQ still points at fluorescent yellow-green as the colour that won on-water detection tests, with orange next. Do not buy navy because it matches the costume.
Rest. Cramp, a cold-water gasp, a pause to clear a lens. You roll, you hold the bag, you get the breath back. Swim Secure prints that its inflatable dry bags will easily support an adult's weight. New Wave prints a buoyancy number, then prints that the buoy is still not a PFD. You can lean on it. You cannot treat it as a lifejacket.
Dry-bag pocket. A car key, a phone for the walk back, a bottle on a long loop. That is the roll-top, separate from the air chamber. It is a pocket, not a certified drybox. Brands hide that sentence in the FAQ.
A buoy without a neon cap is a marker with no head. A neon cap without a buoy is a small target in chop. Rescue notes keep repeating the pair because one object is easier to lose than two.
It will not replace a lifejacket
Every honest shop repeats this, and people still hear "float" and picture a vest. New Wave's 15L page says the swim buoy is not designed to perform as a personal flotation device. Swim England says a tow float is not a substitute for a buoyancy aid. Swim Secure's Tow Float says it is not a buoyancy aid and gives no buoyancy while you swim. It trails. If you need to rest, you grab it. Being seen is how someone finds you. A rest is how you stop a panic turning into a tow. Neither fact makes the bag a Coastguard-approved PFD.
Do not skip the cap because the buoy is bright. Do not skip the buoy because the cap is pink. Do not drop a naked phone in the roll-top and call it waterproof. Do not buy this page as a wetsuit. Rubber is warmth and lift. The float is so a boat can see you on a training loop.

New Wave is the dry-bag buoy I could verify in the US
New Wave still sells the object on the 15L PVC Orange page. Visibility, a place to rest, storage of personal items, air chamber separate from the pocket. Suggested under 190 pounds. 23 by 10 inches. About 9 oz. FAQ buoyancy about 20 lb, 9 kg. The 20L PVC Orange, same day, is $39.95. 25 by 12 inches. Suggested over 190 pounds, or if you want more gear. FAQ buoyancy about 33 lb, 15 kg.
The useful warning is on the product page. Will the dry bag keep a cell phone dry? No. Phone and electronic car key go in a waterproof case the brand does not provide. I would rather a $10 pouch than a dead fob on a car park. If you unroll mid-swim for a gel, water will get in. New Wave says that too. Fluo green for a grey lake. Orange for boats that already know the colour. Navy is how you vanish.
ZONE3 is the on-the-go pocket
ZONE3's Recycled On The Go Swim Buoy was live at £30 on 23 August 2026. Dual belt, leash, 4 L central dry bag, 10 L tow-float volume. The printed job is access: drink, nutrition, valuables, without coming ashore. That is a long-loop tool, not a car-key bunker. The same page says the bag is not fully waterproof. Pair it with another pouch for electronics. The 4 L number is the buying fact. If you need a towel and shoes, buy a Swim Secure 28 L or New Wave 20 L. If you need a bottle you can actually reach, this is the one I could verify on a brand site.
Swim Secure splits marker and luggage
UK shelves are full of copies. Swim Secure is the split I can cite. Tow Float in orange or pink: 41 cm by 32 cm deflated, two chambers, ICE panel, almost no drag. No dry storage. Not a buoyancy aid. £24.99 on the collection page that day. Buy it when the only job is a blob behind you.
Dry Bag is the other object. £34.99. 20 L, 28 L, 35 L, 50 L. Double airbag. Kit goes in before you inflate. The copy says it will easily support an adult if you need to rest. 28 L eats flip-flops, a small towel, a phone, keys. 50 L is a change of clothes. Still bag the phone, even on the window 28 L. If you walk from a car park in a wet kit, that is a changing-robe job after, not a reason to skip the float. The robe is best changing robes.
Treat the pocket as a pocket
Roll-top language sounds waterproof. Brand FAQs do not. New Wave: not waterproof. ZONE3: not fully waterproof. Swim Secure still sells a separate phone bag for the window model. Pack in this order. Waterproof pouch. Phone, fob, anything with a battery. Then the roll-top. Then inflate. Swim Secure's own tip is kit first, air second. Write ICE details on the panel if the float has one.
If it would ruin the week if it drowned, it does not go in the roll-top naked. Case, then pocket. Keys on a car that only talks to a wet fob are how a good swim becomes a recovery truck.
How to pick, without a fake score
Start with the water you actually have. A short, watched lake loop, and you already wear neon: a small two-chamber float is enough. Swim Secure Tow Float. A sea or river where you cannot leave a pile: buy a dry-bag buoy. Under 190 lb and a phone plus keys: New Wave 15L. Heavier, or shoes in the bag: 20L. In the UK, Swim Secure 28 L is the same idea with a bigger hold. A long loop where you want a bottle without landing: ZONE3 Recycled On The Go, 4 L, and still a second pouch.
Colour is not taste. Pink or orange or fluo green. Matching cap. Pealess whistle on the leash if you swim unsupervised, as Swim England already said. Test the belt on land. Inflate until it is firm, not rock.
Be seen. Still log the swim when you get out. A loop nobody wrote down is a Tuesday that vanishes by March.

The float is for the people who are not you. The log is for you, later. A watch that only counts metres will treat a zigzag in chop as a pool 1500. It is not. Write the venue, the advertised course, the clock. One line of water is enough. "east wind, held the buoy at 20 minutes, pocket dry." Open water is a different clock. The habit is why swimmers should log training. Do it on the stones, before the robe eats the thought. Be seen on the water. Still log the swim when you get out. Then deflate the buoy, rinse the salt, and hang the roll-top open so it does not stink by Friday.
