What the Level 3 stamp is for
A first Irish gala is a different job. That page is your child's first Irish gala. Stop there if Saturday is still a Level 1 splash. This page starts when someone says a Level 3 time “can go to regionals” or “can go to Irish Age.”
Swim Ireland’s 2025–26 competition pathway is the feed: Level 3 club opens and Aspiring Champions can send times into regional and national championships, inside the window and in the right course. Regional Age Group & Senior long-course championships are the provincial culmination of the 50m season. Irish Summer National Age Group Championships sit above them for 12–14s. I am not reprinting the five-level table — that is Swim Ireland gala levels 1–5. Parent English: Level 1 is a go. Level 3 is a stamp that can travel. Regionals and Irish Age are where it is supposed to travel to.
Some 2026 regional packs accepted Level 2 times into provincial championships. Irish Age’s 2026 event guide still asked Irish clubs for Level 3 (or higher) on the island of Ireland. A time that got them into Munster or Ulster is not automatically a time Irish Age will take. Match the championship you are entering.
The four regions, as this season named them
Swim Ireland has four regions: Leinster, Munster, Ulster, Connacht. Irish clubs race their own championships. The domestic plan treats those meets as closed — you do not shop regions unless two merge. Mergers change the name on the PDF. For the 2025–26 long-course window, this is how they actually presented themselves:
- Swim Ulster ran the Ulster Age Group & Senior Long Course Championships 2026 as one meet: 1–3 May 2026, Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex, Bangor.
- Swim Munster ran the Munster Age Group & Senior Long Course Championships 2026 (the regional calendar also said Munster Long Course Championships): 15–17 May 2026, UL Sport Arena, Limerick.
- Connacht and Leinster merged. Age-group racing was the Connacht and Leinster Regional Age Group Long Course Championships 2026, 8–10 May at UL Sport, Limerick — 12 and 13/14, with separate Connacht and Leinster finals. Seniors had a second weekend: Regional Senior Championships 2026, 22–24 May, National Aquatic Centre, Dublin.
Next season may not split Connacht and Leinster that way. It may not keep Ulster as a single Age Group & Senior weekend in Bangor. Read the name on this year’s pack, not last year’s WhatsApp album.
Regional Age Group & Senior LC championships
On Swim Ireland’s 2025–26 domestic competition plan, the regional culmination of the 50m season is each Regional Age Group & Senior LC Championships. All four regions run it inside a designated window. The season plan (version 8) opened that competition window on 1 May 2026 and closed it on 1 June 2026 — when the championships are held, not automatically when a qualifying time may be swum.
National notes: minimum age 12 (31 December). Qualification ages 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 & over; finals typically 12, 13/14, 15/16, 17 & over. Long-course times or short-course conversions. QT and CT, written by the region. 400/800/1500 usually heat-declared winner. Times from these championships can feed Irish Summer Nationals if they also sit inside those windows and licence rules. The championship itself is typically Level 4 — Connacht and Leinster’s 2026 age-group pack printed it on the cover — which is why a May regional swim can still be a last-chance Irish Age time.
Winter has a cousin: Regional SC Championships from 13 years, typically Level 2 into the meet, feeding Irish Winter Nationals (25m). This page is the long-course story.
Irish Age — the national 12–14 meet
Parents say Irish Age. Swim Ireland’s page says Irish Summer National Age Group Championships (50m). Same meet. In 2026 it was 9–12 July at UL Sport, Limerick, for 12, 13 and 14 (age on 31 December 2026: typically born 2014, 2013, 2012).
The 2026 event guide is the law. Times had to be long course or short course between 1 January 2026 and 8 June 2026. Hy-Tek converted short-course times were accepted; clubs were told not to convert by hand. Irish clubs had to hit the published standards at a Level 3 licensed meet on the island of Ireland (or higher). Offshore times for Irish-club representation needed the permit and a Hy-Tek file into Swim Ireland. Non-Irish clubs could use a similarly licensed offshore meet. I am not printing the QT/CT table. Entries closed 5pm Friday 12 June — after the window, so the last legal weekend could still land in the file.
Future Challenger cannot skip this queue. The pathway says those times cannot enter Irish Summer National Age Groups. A 12-year-old can often use certain Future Challenger times to enter regionals. Irish Age still wants the Level 3 island stamp.
If they are 15: Youth and Senior, not Irish Age
Irish Age stops at 14. Fifteen and over go to the Irish Summer National Youth & Senior Championships (50m). In 2026 that was 21–25 July at the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin, born 2011 or earlier. Same Level 3-on-the-island rule for Irish clubs. Same published window: 1 January 2026 to 8 June 2026. The bite: Youth & Senior wanted long-course only — no short-course conversions. A converted winter 100 that helped a 13-year-old into Irish Age will not, on that wording, help a 15-year-old here. Regional LC in May still speaks the same language. If they do not make Summer Nationals, some regions run a Swim Festival — a different PDF, not a consolation Irish Age.
Two windows, not one vibe
Championship talk collapses “the window” into one date. There are at least two.

That is why May regionals matter for Irish Age: they are still inside 8 June. A Level 3 100 free in November 2025 can be a legal Munster or Ulster entry and still sit outside the Irish Age window. Course still matters — short course vs long course.
How the licence actually feeds
- ✓Level 3 club open / Aspiring Champions — usual feed into regional LC and, inside the national window, Irish Age or Youth & Senior.
- ✓Regional LC (typically Level 4) — provincial title; times can feed Summer Nationals if the national window and course also match.
- ✓Irish Age / Youth & Senior (Level 5) — the destination. Irish-club entry times generally had to be earned at Level 3+ on the island first.
- ✓Future Challenger (typically Level 2) — can help some 12-year-olds into regional LC. Cannot, on the pathway, enter Irish Age.
Paperwork still sits under the stamp. Level 2–4 times reach the national database only after the host files the return. Only those times are accepted for national entries. A scoreboard screenshot is not an Irish Age QT while the file is on someone’s laptop. Finzy does not sync with that database. You log official versus unofficial yourself.
Qualifying versus consideration — short version
Regionals and Irish Age both use the two columns. A qualifying time typically means they are in if age, course, window and licence also match. A consideration time means they might be. Miss both, and they are not considered. I will not paste this season’s numbers. The parent explainer is qualifying vs consideration times.
Do not take a Level 1 PB, a Future Challenger time, or a screenshot from outside the published window, and enter it as an Irish Age qualifying time. The entry will bounce — or sit in your notes as a QT it never was.
Age is 31 December, not their birthday
Unless the pack is a schools meet, age is age on 31 December of the year of the competition. Swim Ireland’s pathway example: born 2013 swims as 12 in 2025 and 13 in 2026. A child born in 2014 is a 12-year-old for all of 2026, including January when they are still eleven. Irish Age 2026 listed 12 (born 2014), 13 (2013), 14 (2012). Do not enter the 13-year-old column because they “turn thirteen in March.” Full-time National Centre athletes may guest in the centre’s region or the home club’s — once per SC season and once per LC season — and may not take that region’s medals away from home. Everyone else: own region, unless two have merged.
The pack is the law
I have quoted Swim Ireland’s 2025–26 pathway, domestic-plan notes, season plan, and the 2026 Irish Age event guide from swimireland.ie — plus how Ulster, Munster, and Connacht/Leinster named their 2026 LC championships. Those documents already disagree on small dates and on whether regional LC entry is Level 2 or Level 3. That is not a balcony puzzle. Open the PDF for the championship you are entering. Copy the window, the licence line, QT versus CT, and whether conversions are allowed. Wait for accepted entries before you book a hotel on a consideration time.

When a Level 3 time lands, write the licence level, the course, and the date beside it. Then open this season’s Irish Age or regional PDF and see whether that date sits inside the window. The stamp without the dates is only half a qualifier.
Level 3 is the stamp. Regionals are the provincial championships. Irish Age is the national 12–14 meet. The pack on swimireland.ie — not the group chat — decides whether this Saturday counts.
