The Australian ladder, in parent English

Australia is states and territories, then a national Age meet. The rungs most parents actually meet:

Australian Short Course Championships The national 25-metre championship, usually spring (2026: SOPAC, 29 September–2 October). Different QT sheet, different course.

Swimming Australia’s high-performance pathways page lists State Championships (yours and other states), Age & Age MC, the Open, Australian Short Course, and Para Grand Prix as recommended competitions for pathway athletes. The parent job is simpler: which carnival is the next honest one. Canada’s Eastern/Western split is a different country’s map.

Club night is development

Club night is where they learn to dive on a whistle, count their 50s, and sit in a marshalling row. Treat it as practice racing. Many clubs score points, use stopwatches, and race in a 25-metre pool. Results often never become an approved, verified time in Swim Central. That is the point of the rung. A fast club-night 100 free is a reason to enter an approved carnival, not a Nationals announcement. If the bag is packed for a first official Saturday, that briefing is the first Australian carnival — marshalling, packing, and warm-up live on those shared how-tos, not here.

Where the official time lives

Approved results upload to Swim Central. Personal Bests on the profile are the list championship nominations read. A screenshot from the club Facebook page is not that list.

Club, state, and national — one purchase, three layers

You join a club in Swim Central. The store product is typically a bundle: club fee, plus the state or territory member organisation (Swimming NSW, Victoria, Queensland, and the rest), plus Swimming Australia. Season dates are set by the state/national component. Age for which product appears is usually age on the membership start date — often 1 July — so a child who has had a birthday can still see last season’s band in the shop.

Competitive (or the current equivalent) opens championship nominations. Recreational and 8-and-under products are for club night and development. Some states also require a parent in the family group to hold membership. State relay selection for Australian Age has asked for a National Swimmer Membership. Labels move: buy what the club is selling this season, then ask the registrar.

State Age: the first real championship

For a lot of families, State Age is the first meet with a printed QT sheet, heats and finals, and a multi-day program. It is still your state championship. Names differ on purpose. From the 2025–26 / 2026–27 calendars — check this season’s page:

  • New South Wales: Speedo Senior State Age and Youth State Age, LC and SC as separate championships (2026–27 calendar: Senior SC in August, Youth SC in September, Senior LC in December, Youth LC in March). NSW has also limited swimmers to one State Age championship per short-course season, relays included — that sentence is NSW’s, not national law.
  • Victoria: Victorian Age LC Championships (2026/27 Mattioli Victorian Age LC listed for December 2026 at MSAC).
  • Queensland: Queensland Championships under Swimming Queensland regulations (minimum age 12 on the December 2025 SQ pack).

WA, SA, Tasmania, NT, and ACT-linked members print their own Age packs. State Age QTs are a state list. Hitting them does not mint an Australian Age QT. Missing them does not ban Age Nats if they later swim the national cut at an approved 50-metre meet in the national window.

Age Nationals — Australian Age Championships

Parents say Age Nats. The meet page says Australian Age Championships. Competition rules still say Australian Age Swimming Championships. Same carnival. For 2026 it ran 11–18 April at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, age as at 11 April, entries closing 12 noon AEDT 23 March. Hedge dates to the live event page.

From 2026, Swimming Australia put boys and girls 13 through 18 in the same week and reintroduced 13-year-old boys and 18-year-old girls (SwimSwam, July 2025, quoting Swimming Australia). Older rule tables had girls 13–17 and boys 14–18. The QT PDF in front of you is the age grid that counts.

You nominate with a qualifying time — you do not “win State Age and therefore go.” CR 7.3: Age Championship QTs must be from an approved meet in a 50-metre pool using electronic or semi-automatic timing (SAT), on or after 1 May in the year prior, unless the event information says otherwise. The 2026 sheet repeated that window, forbade short-course times, and refused times after the closing date. School meets on closing day were not eligible. I am not printing a 50 free. Numbers live on the Swimming Australia Age Championships page and that year’s QT PDF. Heats and finals are a separate skill — prelims vs finals. Club relays go in Swim Central; state relays go through the state office.

Australian Open — beside Age, not instead of it

The Australian Open is the open national carnival. In 2026 it sat 6–8 April on the Gold Coast, age as at 6 April, long-course times only, qualifying after 1 January 2025. Swimming Australia announced 2026 format changes (Open as a club-championships week beside Age, able-bodied titles shifting toward Trials) — read the current Open event page. Open QTs are another list. An Age Nats QT is not automatically an Open QT.

Long-course summer vs short-course winter

Australian club racing lives in two pools. Long course is 50 metres — summer into autumn, State Age LC, then Age Nationals and the Open. Short course is 25 metres — winter into spring, State Age SC, then Australian Short Course Championships. Keep both clocks — short course vs long course. State booklets are often mixed: NSW Senior State Age SC in 2026 accepted approved LC and SC results from 1 October 2024. Age Nationals in 2026 did not. A conversion may seed a state meet and still be illegal for Australian Age. Write SC or LC on the time before anyone says they have the cut.

Qualifying times — windows, not a consideration band

Swimming Australia’s word is qualifying time. CR 7: they adopt a QT per event and publish it. Long-course Australian events (other than Age) usually take times after 1 January of the prior year. Age uses the May-prior window. Short-course nationals take 25-metre times after 1 January of the prior year, with a 50-metre time accepted without conversion if they have no SC swim — unless that year’s book tightens it. CR 7.4: miss the QT in heats and they are not eligible for the final or as a reserve.

National PDFs do not run a second published “consideration” band. If a state booklet uses consideration or a fill-up line, that sentence is local. Do not invent a cut from a club graphic. The meet information pack is the law that week.

Avoid this

Do not treat a club-night PB as an Age Nats QT. Do not enter Australian Age on a short-course time because Swim Central will convert it. Do not skip State Age out of snobbery or skip approved carnivals because “we’re going straight to Nationals.” The coach, this season’s PDF, and the verified Swim Central time — in that order.

Multi-class, in one note

Multi-class racing has its own national week. Australian MC Age Championships (Age MC, roughly 12–18) ran 4–6 April 2026 on the Gold Coast as the curtain-raiser before Open and Age, age as at 4 April. Swimming Australia also lists Para Grand Prix (MC, 12 and over) and MC events at Australian Short Course. The 2026 Age page said MC results in able-bodied Age week would not go to World Para Swimming, while Australian MC records could still apply. Read the MC information book before you nominate.

How to read which carnival is next

Work top to bottom: membership, verified time, course, state booklet, national sheet, then the coach.

  1. Membership. Competitive club product in Swim Central, current season. Recreational often ends at club night.
  2. Verified time. Personal Bests on the profile. If the swim never approved, the next honest meet is an approved carnival — not State Age on a hope.
  3. Course. SC or LC beside the time. Age Nats is LC. Winter State Age may take both.
  4. State Age PDF. Age-as-at, window, QT, Youth vs Senior split. First championship door for most kids.
  5. Australian Age PDF. Separate list, 50-metre electronic or SAT, May-prior window unless the page says otherwise.
  6. Coach. They know if this child needs another development meet, a QT hunt, or a State Age taper.

Log the swim with the course and the meet name so a 25-metre club night cannot impersonate a 50-metre Age Nats QT.
