The qualifying list is a provincial PDF
Swimming Canada is a club-and-section sport. The child registers with a club; the club affiliates with a Provincial Section; the section sanctions the championship and publishes the qualifying times. That is why “provincial time standards swimming Canada” dumps you on nine websites, not one national spreadsheet. Swim Ontario’s Time Standards, Swim Alberta’s Time Standards, Natation Québec’s Standards — three publishers, three files.
I am not pasting a 50 free. The tables are copyrighted, they fill a screen, and they go stale — sometimes mid-season, when a section reviews entries. Get the clock from this season’s section PDF and the championship meet package. Write the official time, the event, and the course in a list you own — never lose a PB. SwimRankings will catch up. A screenshot from last March is not a season. Club invitationals through named nationals sit on the Swimming Canada pathway. This page is only the qualifying door, and why it changes at a provincial border.
Why a time that “would be a cut in X” is not a cut in Y
Three things move independently: how deep the pool of swimmers is, how the section builds the number, and what the meet is even called.
Ontario is a large age-group population. For 2025–28 it split provincials into Ontario Age Groups (OAG) in March and Ontario Swimming Championships (OSC) in July, both long course, with regional championships underneath (Huronia, WOSA, and the others publish their own regional PDFs). A time that looks “easy” next to a smaller section’s provincials can sit below OAG. That is population, not a moral score.
Swim BC does not copy Ontario. Its 2025–26 Provincial Championship review set short-course metres first from BC ranking placement benchmarks and rolling averages, then derived long-course metres as SCM × 1.02 so Hy-Tek would recognise a BC Championship qualification at Divisionals. Caps on year-on-year movement, a freeze on 11–12 because of small numbers, and a separate Divisional Championships list sit beside the Provincial list. Winter and summer provincials are different weekends. None of that algebra lives in Toronto.
Swim Alberta publishes a three-rung stack and the recipe: Festivals from a five-year average of 40th rank on Alberta short-course rankings; Provincial Trials from the championship standard plus 10%; Provincial Championships from Alberta long-course rankings (12th rank on 50s, 16th on 100s and up; short-course champs at 98% of long course). One standard qualifies you for that level. Hit Championships and you can be de-qualified from Trials — a sentence that does not exist on every other PDF.
So “that 13-year-old 100 free would be a cut in Alberta” might be true for an Alberta Festival and false for OSC, false for a BC Provincial, and true for a ManSask A. Four PDFs. Four answers. The child swam one race.
What the lists are actually called (2025–26 names)
Do not hunt a national “AA.” Some sections use letters. Some use meet names. Hedge to the live PDF: as of August 2026 some sites already show 2026–27 files. Season start is 1 September.

Invitationals still write their own doors — no-cut, slower-than, or a borrowed regional standard. The host package is the law that Saturday.

A short-course cut is not a long-course cut
Canadian club racing uses metres. Winter is usually short course metres (SCM, 25m). Championship season often moves to long course metres (LCM, 50m). Sections publish both columns. Hit the SCM Festival cut in January. That does not mint the LCM Provincial cut in July unless the package says converted or either-course times count.
Some sections derive one course from the other — Swim BC’s 2025–26 LCM = SCM × 1.02; Swim Alberta’s championship SCM at 98% of LCM — and some publish independently. Converted times are maths, not a swim: personal best vs official vs converted, and the metres split on short course vs long course. Write SCM or LCM next to every time. Nova Scotia’s 2025–26 AAA sheet allowed either course; that sentence is Nova Scotia’s, not a national rule.
Age as of day one — and why they “lost” the cut on a birthday
Swimming Canada rule C5.1.1.4: age is as of the first day of the meet. The standard they must beat is for the age they will be that weekend, in that section’s bands — not the age they were when they swam it, unless the package says otherwise. ManSask’s 2026 summer package said it in parent English: qualify in the age they will be at the competition.
Age bands are not national. Ontario uses single ages and 11&U / 17&O style columns. BC provincials group 11–12, 13–14, 15–16, 17&O. Alberta Festivals include 10&U (9&U race their own category after making the 10&U standard). Québec’s Coupe Espoir / Championnat québécois columns run 12–13 through 17 / 17+. A 12-year-old “cut” in one section is a different row — and sometimes a different meet name — in the next. Aging up is the unkind trick: the child did not forget how to swim; the class got harder. Check age-as-of before you celebrate a cut that belongs to last month’s birthday.
National time standards are another stack
Swimming Canada does publish time standards. They are not a national age-group motivational ladder. The live index is Time Standards and Preliminary Competition Information. The 2026–2028 packet (reviewed each August) names Canadian Swimming Trials (senior and junior, long course; Trials age as of 31 December), the Canadian Open, and Canadian Short Course Championships, plus para packets. Those numbers are the door to those meets.
A provincial championship cut is a section problem; a Trials cut is a national-meet problem. You can have an OAG time and not be near Trials. You can chase a Canadian Open standard and still need the provincial PDF for July. Para provincial standards are often Swimming Canada’s provincial MQS / MET sheet that sections host — still a different file from OSC or Festivals. There is no Canadian equivalent of a single national B–AAAA report card. If a club spreadsheet is labelled AA, ask which section’s AA.
Blue is the section PDF. Orange is Swimming Canada’s named national meets. Hosts sometimes borrow a letter as a door. That still does not merge the files.
Moving provinces — and racing out of section
Registration is club → Provincial Section → Swimming Canada (2025–26 National Registration Procedures). You generally register with a club in the section of your permanent residence, with the manual’s listed exceptions. A family that moves from Mississauga to Kelowna does not bring an OSC cut as a BC Provincial ticket. They bring official times. The new coach maps those times onto Swim BC’s current PDF, for the age on day one of the BC meet, in the correct course, inside the BC qualifying period.
An invitational in another province is common. Entering another section’s championship as if you were a local qualifier is a meet-package question — many are closed or restricted to that PS’s clubs (C5.1.1.5). East Coast Championships and ManSask are the exceptions that prove the rule: sections agreed to share a list. Your group chat is not a ManSask. Ask the new registrar about transfers, then download the new PDF.
Do not tell a child their time “doesn’t count” because it would not be a cut in a deeper province. Do not enter this year’s provincials off last year’s PDF. Do not treat a USA Swimming AA screenshot as a Canadian qualifying time. The meet package, this season’s section file, and the coach — in that order.
How to find your province’s current cuts PDF
Fifteen minutes. Do this once per season, and again if the coach mentions a mid-year update.
- Name the Provincial Section, not the city. The club’s affiliation is the publisher.
- Open the section Time Standards / Competitions / Standards page — not a club Facebook album.
- Download this season’s standards PDF and the championship meet package (qualifying period, how many QTs, bonus / NQ, de-qualification). Confirm the header year. As of August 2026, some pages have already rolled to 2026–27.
- Match age as of day one, gender, event, and SCM vs LCM. Then stop. The other province’s spreadsheet is trivia.
The official time is a fact. The cut is a sentence in a provincial PDF. Those are two different objects. Log the fact. Let the PDF be the door.
If the screenshot says B, BB, or AAAA — that is a different country
USA Swimming’s B through AAAA letters are a national motivational report card, rebuilt each Olympic quad — USA Swimming time standards. They are not Canadian provincial cuts. Manitoba’s AA, Nova Scotia’s AAA, New Brunswick’s A & B, and Ontario’s development letters happen to use the alphabet. Do not mix the files. Swim England licences and British Rankings are another country again.
After the session, put the time in Finzy with the event and the course. The PDF is the law for that championship. A parent comparison across a provincial border is a conversation, not an entry.
