Two lists, not one

Parents mash three objects into one screenshot. Motivational times are a national report card rebuilt each Olympic quad (current set: 2024–2028). That page already exists. I am not reprinting the letter table. LSC championship cuts are whatever Pacific, Illinois, Florida Gold Coast, or Potomac Valley printed for Age Group Champs this season. Named national championships — Speedo Sectionals, TYR Futures, Speedo Junior National Championships, Speedo Winter Junior Championships, Toyota U.S. Open — sit on USA Swimming’s Time Standards index and update on their own calendar, not on the four-year motivational PDF. A first B/C Saturday is still a first B/C Saturday. When the coach starts saying Sectionals, this is the map.

The 2026 named ladder

USA Swimming’s 2026 Time Standards index (17 August 2026) lists Toyota National Championships, Toyota U.S. Open Championships, Speedo Junior National Championships, Speedo Winter Junior Championships, TYR Futures Championships, and Speedo Sectionals. The 2026 mini-rulebook calendar and the Events page match those names. The 2025 index still said “Speedo Summer Junior Nationals.” If a group chat uses last year’s label, ask which PDF they opened.

Rung 2026 named meet — what it actually is
LSC Age Group Championships Your Local Swimming Committee’s season-end champs — often a winter yards meet and a summer long-course meet. Cuts are local. Not the national letter table.
Speedo Sectionals Large regional championships, winter (usually SCY) and summer (usually LCM), many sites. USA Swimming publishes maximum standards; the host PDF is the cut you chase.
TYR Futures Championships The national-flavored step between Sectionals and Junior Nationals. 2026: 29 July–1 August, five sites, long course, capped.

Named meets, not letters LSC champs Sectionals Futures Junior Nats / Winter Juniors U.S. Open Toyota National Championships is the senior national meet — same summer week as 2026 Futures, different PDF. The orange row is the meet. The motivational letter is a different document. Hosts sometimes borrow a letter as a door at a local invitational. That still does not merge the two PDFs.

LSC championships — the first weekend that feels like champs

USA Swimming delegates day-to-day racing to about 59 Local Swimming Committees (2024 membership demographics report). Pacific is not Illinois. Some states are one LSC; California and Texas are several. Each LSC writes Age Group Championship cuts — and usually a Senior Championship list. Winter champs are often short course yards; summer often long course meters. Age is usually age on the first day of that meet.

Those cuts are not the national B–AAAA table, even when a club email says “A cuts” as shorthand. In a stacked LSC the list can sit around A or AA on the motivational table; in a smaller one it can be gentler. Having an A time in SWIMS does not put them in champs. Having a BB does not keep them out. Read the LSC PDF. Some LSCs also send kids to Zone Age Group Championships (Eastern, Southern, Central, Western). That is a regional extra — not Sectionals, and not a missing national rung on the Time Standards index.

Where the numbers live

National championship PDFs: USA Swimming Time Standards. Dates and sites: USA Swimming Events. LSC championship cuts: your LSC website. I am not reprinting any of them.

Speedo Sectionals — regional, with a national ceiling

Speedo Sectionals are the first named USA Swimming championship most club families treat as bigger than the LSC. They run as a series: typically winter short course yards and summer long course meters, at regional sites. Your LSC names this year’s host. I am not guessing an Indianapolis weekend from a 2025 heat sheet.

USA Swimming publishes 2026 Maximum Time Standards — Speedo Sectionals, qualifying from 1 June 2025 through the entry deadline. “Maximum” is a host rule, not a swimmer cap. The official sheet says hosts may use their own standards but may not exceed the published list: cuts may be slower (easier) but not faster (harder). A deep section can still feel brutally fast. The swimmer’s job is the time on that announcement, proven in SWIMS, in the right course. A sectional cut is not a Futures cut. An AAAA stamp is not a sectional cut.

TYR Futures — the national-flavored middle step

TYR Futures Championships sit between Sectionals and Junior Nationals. USA Swimming has run them as a multi-site long-course meet for more than a decade; a fifth region was added in 2022. They are open to Premium or Outreach members who have the published standard — the 2026 meet information does not put an 18-and-under lid on the door the way Junior Nationals does. Senior-aged swimmers can show up.

2026 TYR Futures Championships (meet information dated 2 April 2026): 29 July–1 August, long course, five sites — Austin, Texas; Greensboro, North Carolina; Knoxville, Tennessee; Madison, Wisconsin; Sacramento, California. Cap: 700 swimmers per site. Entries through Online Meet Entry; qualifying period 1 June 2025 through the entry deadline. Bonus events existed, with their own rules in that book. Caps, late entries, and “new qualifying swims” windows change every year. The announcement is the law, not this paragraph next February.

Junior Nationals and Winter Juniors — two meets, two courses, two names

Parents say “Juniors” as if it were one weekend. In 2026 USA Swimming names two junior national championships.

Speedo Junior National Championships is the summer long-course junior national meet. 2026 meet information (updated 14 May 2026): 3–7 August 2026, William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center, Irvine, California. Athletes must be 18 or under on the first day of the meet. Qualifying period: 1 June 2025 through the entry deadline, via OME. Bonus events required the published bonus standards — not “any extra event.”

That Irvine week sat immediately after Toyota National Championships in the same pool (28 July–1 August 2026, 2026 mini-rulebook). Nationals is the senior national championship. Junior Nationals is the 18-and-under national championship. Same city, different PDF, different age rule. Do not tell a 15-year-old they “made Nationals” if they made Juniors.

Speedo Winter Junior Championships is the December short-course yards junior national meet. 2026: 9–12 December, SCY, multi-site (USA Swimming Events page, 17 August 2026 — locations still TBD on that calendar). Parents say Winter Juniors, East and West. Same idea as summer Juniors, different course, different cut sheet.

Name hygiene, dated: the 2025 Time Standards index still labeled the summer meet Speedo Summer Junior Nationals. The 2026 index labels it Speedo Junior National Championships. Winter stayed Speedo Winter Junior Championships. If a 2024 blog says Summer Juniors, they probably mean this meet. Open this year’s PDF anyway.

Toyota U.S. Open — open age, different job

Toyota U.S. Open Championships is an open-age national meet. 2026: 2–5 December, Austin, Texas, long course (USA Swimming Events page, 17 August 2026). It sits one week before Winter Juniors. It is not an 18-and-under championship, and it is not Toyota Nationals in July. Faster than Juniors is the parent picture; the PDF is the door. Olympic Trials (2028) sits above this stack. This page stops at the club-to-Juniors/Open ladder.

Avoid this

Do not enter this year’s Sectionals on last year’s screenshot. Do not treat AAAA as a Futures ticket. Do not call Junior Nationals “Nationals.” Do not assume a yards cut is a meters cut. The meet announcement, this year’s USA Swimming file, and the coach — in that order.

How a cut actually gets them in

Five checks beat a year of group-chat folklore.

  1. Name the meet — LSC Age Group Champs, Speedo Sectionals, TYR Futures, Speedo Junior National Championships, Speedo Winter Junior Championships, or Toyota U.S. Open. Not “AAAA nationals.”
  2. Open that PDF. National index: USA Swimming Time Standards. LSC champs: the LSC site. Confirm course (SCY vs LCM) and whether bonus standards exist.
  3. Check the qualifying period. The 2026 summer national series printed 1 June 2025 through the entry deadline. A 2024 swim is a story, not an entry.
  4. Prove it in SWIMS. Championship books treat a time in USA Swimming’s public search, inside the window, as proven. Meet Mobile is unofficial — why the time is not in SWIMS.
  5. Enter the way the announcement says. Named national championships use Online Meet Entry (hub.usaswimming.org). OME is not an eligibility report. Caps and late-entry windows are in that site’s book.

You usually do not need an LSC medal to enter Sectionals or Futures. You need the time, the membership, and the entry. Bonus rules are written per meet: Futures 2026 allowed bonus swims off a qualifying event with no extra standard; Junior Nationals 2026 required published bonus standards. Do not import one book’s bonus rule into the other.

The letter describes the swim. The named meet is the door. The announcement is the law. Those are three different sentences.

Write the course next to every time. A sectional SCY cut is not a Futures LCM cut. Converted maths is not the swim the PDF asked for — personal best vs official vs converted. If a search for “levels” dumped you on an Irish or English meet-licence map, that is a different object. Swim Ireland 1–5 and Swim England 1–4 classify the meet. This page classifies named USA championships.

FAQ

No. B through AAAA is USA Swimming’s age-group motivational report card — the letter stack. Speedo Sectionals, TYR Futures, Speedo Junior National Championships, Speedo Winter Junior Championships, and the Toyota U.S. Open each publish their own time-standard PDFs. An AAAA motivational stamp can still miss a championship cut. Read that meet’s announcement.
Club invitationals, then your LSC’s Age Group (and often Senior) Championships, then Speedo Sectionals, then TYR Futures Championships, then the junior national meets — Speedo Junior National Championships in summer long course and Speedo Winter Junior Championships in December yards — and the Toyota U.S. Open. Toyota National Championships is the senior national meet on a separate, faster list. 2026 names: USA Swimming Time Standards page, 17 August 2026.
In 2026 USA Swimming’s Time Standards index names the summer long-course junior national meet Speedo Junior National Championships (3–7 August 2026, Irvine; 18 and under on day one). The December short-course yards meet is Speedo Winter Junior Championships (9–12 December 2026, multi-site). Parents still say Summer Juniors and Winter Juniors. The 2025 index still listed Speedo Summer Junior Nationals — use this season’s PDF.
No. Each Local Swimming Committee writes its own Age Group Championship list. In a deep LSC those cuts can sit around A or AA on the national motivational table; in a smaller one they can be easier. Having an A time does not mean they are in champs. Check the LSC championship announcement. First-Saturday logistics: your child’s first USA Swimming meet.
Usually no. The door is a proven qualifying time in that meet’s qualifying period, sitting in SWIMS, then entered the way the announcement says — often through Online Meet Entry. An LSC medal is not a secret handshake. LSC champs are still the first weekend most families treat as champs. Read the host PDF.
USA Swimming’s Time Standards page is the live index for Speedo Sectionals (maximum standards), TYR Futures, Speedo Junior National Championships, Speedo Winter Junior Championships, Toyota U.S. Open, and Toyota National Championships. LSC championship cuts live on your LSC website. The meet announcement is the law for that weekend. I am not printing a 50 free. If the time is missing from the official file: SWIMS versus Meet Mobile.
